2015 BCBSNM Focus Story

BCBSNM provided a grant to the Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation’s Zia Freewheelers Adaptive Cycling Team, which is the only adaptive cycling team in New Mexico.

Many children with disabilities struggle to be independent and mobile. Being able to ride a bicycle helps them build strength, endurance and independence and be active in our community. Bicycles are customized and adapted to a specific disability of the child, enabling them to have the freedom to ride on their own. The team is led by a physical therapist and two assistant coaches who help with the modification of the bikes and training of the riders.

Funding that BCBSNM provides to the Zia Freewheelers Adaptive Cycling Team assists with the cost of repairs, replacement parts, and registration fees for the team to participate in community cycling events.
