Healthy Kids, Healthy Families®
The Healthy Kids, Healthy Families® (HKHF) initiative is our signature grant program, designed to improve the health and wellness of children and their families through community investments.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM) supports organizations by partnering with groups that offer sustainable, measurable programs that are focused in four areas: nutrition, physical activity, disease prevention and management, and safe environments.
In 2015, some of our HKHF partners included AVANCE in Las Cruces, Abrazos Family Support Services in Bernalillo, National Indian Youth Council, Inc. in Gallup, and Cuidando Los Ninos in Albuquerque. In 2015, BCBSNM provided more than $345,000 to 20 organizations through HKHF grants.
2015 BCBSNM FOCUS STORY – Assistance Dogs of the West
For the past several years, BCBSNM has provided a HKHF grant to Assistance Dogs of the West (ADW) in support of their Courthouse Dogs program. ADW raises and trains courthouse facility dogs with kindness and respect to help legal professionals assist crime victims, predominantly children, who have witnessed a horrific crime, domestic violence or are victims of abuse.
Through ADW’s Courthouse Dogs program, these trained canines physically, unobtrusively and emotionally help provide a safer and more comfortable environment for children who must provide depositions or give testimony in court. Their cuddly presence helps relieve stress and provide comfort and courage to the children participating in court proceedings.
